The sizes that matter
"Comic size" means several things depending on the country and the format. These are the trims you will meet at printers and on shelves. Trim is the finished, cut page; the art you deliver is trim plus bleed, almost always 0.125 in (3 mm) on every edge.
| Format | Trim (in) | Trim (mm) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| US standard comic | 6.625 x 10.25 | 168 x 260 | Monthly floppies, most indie comics |
| US golden age / oversize | 7 x 10.5 to 8 x 11 | 178 x 267 to 203 x 279 | Prestige and art editions |
| Manga tankobon (B6) | 5.04 x 7.17 | 128 x 182 | Collected manga volumes |
| Trade 6 x 9 | 6 x 9 | 152 x 229 | Graphic novels, POD trades |
| Manga (US editions) | 5 x 7.5 or 5.5 x 8.25 | 127 x 191 / 140 x 210 | Translated manga |
| Franco-Belgian album | ~8.5 x 11.4 (A4-ish) | 215 x 290 to 240 x 320 | European albums |
| Magazine / letter | 8.5 x 11 | 216 x 279 | Anthologies, magazines |
| Zine / minicomic | 5.5 x 8.5 (half letter) | 140 x 216 | Photocopied and stapled minis |
| A5 | 5.83 x 8.27 | 148 x 210 | Minis and zines outside the US |
US standard: 6.625 x 10.25 in
The modern American comic trim. Mixam, PrintNinja, Ka-Blam and IngramSpark all publish specs around it, though their bleed and safe values differ (see the printer presets). With standard bleed the art size is 6.875 x 10.5 in, or 2063 x 3150 px at 300 DPI (every format's pixel size is in comic page size in pixels). Original art is traditionally drawn larger, on 11 x 17 in boards with a 10 x 15 in live area, then reduced.
Manga sizes
Japanese tankobon are B6 (128 x 182 mm). North American manga editions are usually 5 x 7.5 in or 5.5 x 8.25 in, close to but not exactly B6. If you are printing a manga-format book in the US, pick the printer's nearest trim rather than the Japanese size; converting 128 x 182 mm gives 5.04 x 7.17 in which nobody stocks. Doujinshi sizes, manuscript paper frames and pixel sizes are in the manga page size guide.
Graphic novels and print on demand
Amazon KDP and IngramSpark offer a fixed list of trims. 6 x 9 in is the common choice for a graphic novel because it is cheap and every distributor carries it; 6.625 x 10.25 in is available at IngramSpark for comics. KDP does not offer the US comic trim, so books built for KDP are usually 6 x 9 or 7 x 10 in. Check the current trim list before you draw a page.
Picking a size before you draw
- Decide where it will be printed (or if it will be printed at all).
- Take that printer's trim, bleed and safe area. The page size calculator turns them into a canvas.
- Draw at bleed size with trim and safe guides. Drawing bigger and reducing is fine; drawing at trim and enlarging is not.
- Keep the aspect ratio if you might reprint elsewhere. 6.625:10.25 is about 0.646; 6:9 is 0.667; a page laid out for one crops on the other.
