How Many Pages Should a Comic Have? Issues, Trades and Graphic Novels
Issues, trades and graphic novels each have a usual page range, always a multiple of four. See the ranges, then get a count for your own script from its beats or panels.

The printing constraint first
Interior pages must be a multiple of four, because a printed book is folded sheets and each sheet carries four pages. 20, 24, 28, 32. Not 22, not 30. Covers do not count; a "32-page comic" is 32 interior pages plus a four-page cover (front, inside front, inside back, back). If you end up at 30 pages of story, you add two blanks or two pages of back matter, and it is better to decide where they go than to let the printer put them at the end. The page count validator checks this and tells you how many sheets it makes.
Common lengths and why
| Format | Interior pages | Binding | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashcan / mini | 8 to 16 | Saddle stitch | Two to four sheets. Cheap at a copy shop; fold and staple yourself. |
| Standard issue | 20 to 24 story + ads | Saddle stitch | 32 total is the classic monthly. |
| Indie one-shot | 24 to 48 | Saddle stitch | 48 is about the limit before the book stops closing flat. |
| Trade / collection | 96 to 160 | Perfect bound | Four to six issues collected. Needs a spine. |
| Graphic novel | 120 to 300 | Perfect bound | Price and shipping weight climb with every signature. |
Estimating from a script
Two rules of thumb writers use. By beats: count the story units (a scene, a conversation, a fight) and allow one to three pages each. Twelve beats at two pages is 24 pages. By panels: a standard comic page carries about five panels, decompressed work three to four, dense work six or seven. A script with 110 panels is about 22 pages at standard density, 24 once padded. The page count estimator does both and pads the answer.
The other check is words. A page over about 210 words of dialogue starts to bury the art; the comfortable range is 60 to 150 words per page, or 25 to 35 per panel. Paste a script into the pacing tool to see where you sit.
Page turns
Page 1 is a right-hand page on its own. After that, even pages are on the left and odd pages on the right, and every odd page ends with a turn. That turn is the one moment of concealment a comic has: put the reveal at the top of the next left-hand page and the question at the bottom of the odd page before it. An act break that lands on an even page has no turn to hide behind. The issue planner tells you which way each act ends.
When to go longer
Price scales roughly linearly with pages, so 48 costs about 40% more than 32 at the same quantity. If the story wants 40 pages, make it 40; if it wants 30, cut to 28 or find two pages of process art and sketches for the back, which readers enjoy and printers count.
