Comic Safe Areas Explained
Keep text and faces at least 0.25 in inside the trim, 0.375 to 0.5 in at some printers, more on the inner edge of a glued book. What the safe area protects.

The line nothing important crosses
The safe area (also called the live area or type-safe area) is a rectangle inset from the trim. Anything inside it survives a cut that drifts inward. Anything between the safe line and the trim line probably survives. Anything outside the trim is bleed and is gone by design. Lettering, faces, panel borders you care about, page numbers and signatures live inside the safe area.
How big
| Source | Safe inset |
|---|---|
| Industry default | 0.25 in (6 mm) |
| PrintNinja | 0.25 in |
| Mixam comics | 0.375 in |
| IngramSpark | 0.5 in |
| Perfect-bound inner edge | Add 0.125 to 0.25 in more (the gutter swallows it) |
On a 6.625 x 10.25 in page with a 0.25 in safe inset, the live area is 6.125 x 9.75 in. The bleed calculator draws it to scale and gives the pixel offsets for your canvas.
The gutter is a second safe area
In a perfect-bound book the inner edge disappears into the spine, and a thick book does not open flat. Whatever sits in the inner 0.25 to 0.375 in is hard to read without cracking the spine. KDP asks for an inside margin of at least 0.375 in, more for books over 150 pages, and its 6 x 9 presets use that. For spreads, keep faces and lettering off the centre 0.5 in entirely.
Panel borders and the safe line
A common layout puts the outer panel borders on the safe line, with the panel art bleeding into the margin beyond it. That works. What does not work is a border sitting exactly on the trim: any drift either shows a white hairline outside it or slices it off. Either bleed the panel fully or keep its border at least a safe-margin inside the trim.
Page numbers and running heads
Page numbers go inside the safe area, usually 0.25 to 0.375 in from the trim at the bottom outer corner. Remember the outer corner alternates: left on even pages, right on odd pages.
Questions
How far from the edge should text be on a comic page?
At least 0.25 inch inside the trim line; some printers ask for 0.375 or 0.5 inch. Add more on the inner edge of perfect-bound books.
